Romy and Clare in Studio at Work

About Romy & Clare

Long before their professional training at Herron School of Art and Design and Depauw University respectively, Romy and Clare played together as children with mud and paint, flowers, forests, cats, kittens and colorful chickens.  Now Romy Kissel and Clare Backer-Bies are working mothers and lifelong friends who enjoy creating elegant and fun-spirited functional works of art.

In their Jasper, Indiana studio, formerly a one hundred year-old grainery, they create their bold whimsical designs.  Their design and inspiration begins with their hand painted pottery and a rich vibrant color palette. Their designs are then developed into other mediums such as jewelry and mixed-media clay wall art.

They have hosted several public workshops in the process of creating community art and continue to be active and engaged in their community.  Romy and Clare also have created commercial clay and mixed-media mosaic installations.  Their work can be found in retail stores nation-wide and on the internet.

Romy and Clare work together in a true collaborative manner on each design.  Each piece holds the personality of both designers, yet does so in a balanced and unified manner.  They continue to explore their world with an unquenchable curiosity and collaboratively evolve their designs in happy harmony.

~~~~~
"We enjoy working with bright bold colors in our graphic and organic designs.  Our favorite mediums are earthenware pottery, jewelry, and mixed media clay wall art.
You may find many different techniques and materials in our work, such as hand-carved clay, raku fired stoneware, special glazing techniques, and mosaic embellishments of glass, semi-precious stones, and recycled materials.
We love what we do and we do what we love.  We hope you enjoy our work as much as we enjoyed creating it!"
